Sedgwick Attorneys Mentor High School Student Teams at Annual Mentor Negotiation Competition; Martin Eide Mentors Winning Team

December 2012

Sedgwick is pleased to congratulate the students of A. Philip Randolph Campus High School in New York and their attorney-mentor Sedgwick Associate Martin Eide for winning first place in the inaugural 2012 Mentor Negotiation Competition, hosted by the New York City Bar Association and Fordham Law School Dispute Resolution Society (DRS).  Sixteen student teams of three from across New York City participated, with the final rounds concluding on November 9.  Judges included John Feerick, professor and former dean of Fordham Law School, among others.

In preparation of the competition, the students participated in a negotiation workshops, run by the DRS Board, which focused on how to best identify a party’s interests, how to communicate effectively, and how to generate practical solutions.  Sedgwick associates Dirk Haarhoff and Daniel Pickett also served as attorney-mentors during the competition, coaching students from The Opportunity Network, as did Sedgwick associate Katelin O’Rourke Gorman, who coached students from Belmont Preparatory High School.  Katelin, as chair of the NYC Bar Association's Subcommittee on Student Pipeline Programs also helped to organize the competition.  Partner Greg Lahr (Sedgwick’s Pro Bono Committee) also provided the teams with guidance and support.

Fordham Law’s Dispute Resolution Society (DRS) is a student-run organization that competes in domestic and international arbitration, negotiation and mediation competitions.

The goal of the Mentor Negotiation Competition is to provide high school students with a similar forum.  The competition was designed to educate and promote interest in the skills and techniques that define effective negotiators.  The students were given the rare opportunity to practice legal advocacy and collaborative problem-solving skills, while receiving constructive evaluation and feedback from experienced practitioners and judges.
