June 2017

Sedgwick San Francisco partner Earl Hagström and Cardno ChemRisk supervising health scientist Angela Perez, PhD, will address the legal and toxicological implications of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under shifting environmental regulations in today’s marketplace in a one-hour webinar starting at 11:00 a.m. PDT on Thursday, June 15, 2017. The webinar, “Beyond PFOA and PFOS — the Next Wave of Perfluorochemicals-Related Liability,” will offer participants risk-management options and provide an overview of current litigation issues.

Hagström, a partner in Sedgwick’s Environmental and Toxic Tort Practice Group, will discuss current and past lawsuits surrounding the chemicals, including several class actions and bodily injury cases and the types of legal theories and legal defenses that have played a critical role in this litigation.

Perez, a toxicologist, will be speaking on what’s new in the science of PFOA and PFOS (fluorinated organic chemicals that are part of the larger group of PFAS chemicals) and will address the toxicological impacts on the body and the health-risk factors of these chemicals, which can build up in time and affect blood and organs and in theory have been linked to ailments such as cancer and thyroid issues.

PFOA and PFOS have long been used in many industrial applications and consumer products such as carpeting, apparel, paper coatings and fire-fighting foams, however, recent changes in EPA recommendations have become stricter on PFAS concentration and usage in products, increasing possible legal liability. Manufacturers, firefighters, governmental water districts and insurance companies are among the entities that could be affected.

The one-hour seminar can be viewed over a lunchtime and is free. For more information and to register, click here.
